PK-12. Higher Education. Adult Education. And More.
Multilingualism and multiculturalism are essential for all U.S. schools and educational institutions, due to the demographic changes across the nation. And teachers and educators at every level are needed to support bilingual and English-language learners.
In the M.Ed. in Bilingual Education, you’ll focus on the practical application of current theory, research and assessment in bilingual education—particularly on the value of linguistic diversity, inclusivity, and the design and implementation of culturally sustaining bilingual curriculum and practices. Highlights include UTEP’s unique location on the U.S.-Mexico border and faculty with expertise in preparing teachers to work with Latinos, English-language learners and immigrant students. UTEP is also one of only 19 Hispanic-Serving Institutions in the country designated as an R1 top-tier research university.
While this program does not result in teaching certifications, it provides the skills to pursue employment as a public or private school teacher (bilingual/ELL/ESL). Other possibilities include adult literacy/GED/ESL/ELL teacher, two-way immersion teacher, community college instructor, corporate trainer, and specialist roles in bilingual education curriculum or professional development.
You don’t need a teaching license or a GRE to apply. A bachelor’s degree is required. Spanish language proficiency is not required but a basic understanding might be helpful in some classes.
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree to qualify for admission to this master’s program.
